House Style
Throughout creating my three products I kept a house style, by having a house style this enables the products to be identified as all linking together. Once they are identifiable, this allows the band to become a 'brand', which associates with the Richard Dyer's star theory. To create this house style I made sure that over all my products I kept a black and white theme, to bring across the alternative-rock feeling/mood.
I also used very similar fonts and photos for both my ancillary texts as shown in the picture below.
Target Audience
Research
To find out what people thought of my video and to see what improvements I could make if I were to do it again, I created a survey using SurveyMonkey. This is what it looks like...
In the end I actually received 20 results for this survey which I was really pleased with! All 20 people answered that they do like my video which is great. For the second question some of the answers included things like...
'i liked the story behind it and how you have linked it to the song''the genre and the narrative''I like the song and also how well the video works with the lyircs''Everything!'
I was really happy with all this positive feedback. For my third question 11 people said Young Adults (18-21) and 9 people said Teens (13-17) so as I assumed the target audience would be younger adults and also teenagers who would consume this music video. Finally for my last question, I feel I did receive some really good feedback which has made me think that I would definitely take some of the comments on board if I actually were to re create my music video. Some comments included things like...
'you could show his life before it got like it is shown to add effect and create more of a narrative'
'Try adding more of a story'
'maybe show more performance of the band'
'You could show he got himself into the drugs in the first place, but I really enjoyed watching :)'
I also did this for both my ancillary texts...
I asked the same people who filled out my first survey to also fill out this survey as well, so I did again get 20 responses which is great. For my first question 100% of the people answered yes which I could not be more pleased about. For the second question I received some comments such as...
'I really like the poster, I think it looks really professional!'
'I think they're both eye catching'
'they go well with the alt rock genre'
'they look cool and i like the pack of cards idea'
For my third question, 19 people said they do think my two ancillary texts create a house style, meaning that 1 person answered no. From looking at my comments for the fourth question I think this can be explained why the one person answered no when talking about different types of font...
'make font the same on both poster and cd'
'Try to make the CD a bit more detailed, could add a picture on the back cover where the track list is! But I really like them both.'
'add picture to the cd's'
'Maybe add more detail onto the cd case'
Ancillary Texts In Action
From looking at all my feedback that has been given to me from questionnaires and me asking people in person what I could do to improve if I were to redo my coursework again, I think for my music video I would try to add more depth to the video by showing how the man in the music video actually got himself into such a state by consuming drugs and alcohol, I could have maybe shown the audience how happy his life was before but then something dramatic happened which lead him to react in this way. I think by doing this it would catch the audience's attention more and maybe even make them want to watch the music video again and again. I would have also shown more clips of the band, even though I did want my music video to be more of a narrative video, I still would have liked to have added more lip sync and more performance as this as well may have attracted the audience's attention more.
For my ancillary texts I agreed with the feedback given on my questionnaire as I think I could have added a bit more detail into the digipak with the back cover especially. I originally liked the simplicity of the digipak although looking at it now it feels like there could have been something added such as a picture or just artwork to make it more eye catching. Same with the front cover of the digipak, I wish I had used maybe a different picture as this one does look fairly plain even though I do like the picture, I don't think it goes for my front cover.
I really enjoyed making my poster and I think the outcome for it was great and I had definitely done the best I could with this ancillary text. I believe it is really eye catching from everything such as the main image used and even the font works well. As soon as I found this font I knew straight away it would look good and work well for my poster and it turns out it has really made an effect. I also think the picture that I took for my poster worked great as the way I have made the people arrange themselves doesn't look too busy or anything it just seems to work well. The detail at the bottom of the poster also finishes it off and adds a little touch.
Overall it seems that from conducting all my research to find out how effective my combination of my main product and ancillary texts, that they do work together well and come across as effective due to all the positive feedback I received through survey monkey and through family/friends.
